Meet the Doctor

Cornea Centre is aims to provide tertiary care to cornea patients from India and abroad. It is located at Sector 22 (Opposite to the Parade Ground), Chandigarh, India and is easily approachable by rail, road and air from the National Capital New Delhi and other major towns/ Cities of the region. At the Cornea Centre, our most important goal is to preserve and provide eyesight. We strive to provide patient-friendly, exceptional quality medical care in a completely comfortable ambience that is inviting and comfortable for the entire family. We want our patients to look forward to visiting us as much as we look forward to seeing them. The aim in not only to treat the diseased, but also to provide preventive care and growth monitoring. The doctors have vast experience in their respective fields and have worked in pioneer institutes like PGIMER (Post graduate institute of medical education and research), Chandigarh. Cornea Centre also provides eye care to the poor and low socioeconomic status population at subsidized rates. To spread eye care awareness in the villages and suburban, we also hold camps where free consultation and medicines are provided

Dr Ashok Sharma, M.S.(Opthamology) PGI, Chandigarh, is a renowned opthamologist of the region with over 30 years of experience in opthamology . His present designations are Director, Cornea Centre, Chandigarh and Medical Director, City Eye Bank. Before his present venture , he served Advanced Eye Centre, Post Graduate Institute as Associate Professor, Cornea, Refractive surgery and Eye Banking. His areas of specializations include Corneal Transplants, External Eye & Corneal Deseases, Contact Lenses, Refractive Surgery (LASIK) and Eye Banking. Fellowships: Cornea and refractive surgery, Eye Consultants of Maryland, USA and Eye Banking, Tissue Bank International Baltimore, USA (1996). Cornea and Anterior Segment Fellowship (1994): LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. His Experience: He has worked in the Eye Deppt. PGIMER, Chandigarh a Premier Institute as Faculty member. He has founded a prestigious Cornea Centre, Chandigarh and is serving as Director of the Centre.

SPECIALITY EXPERIENCE

Seventeen years experience of treating Corneal Diseases at Tertiary Care Centre, Eye Deptt., PGIMER, Chandigarh. (1985-2002) Thirteen years of experience of managing medical and surgical corneal problems in Practice. He has an extensive experience of performing Corneal Grafts. He has performed maximum number of corneal grafts in the region. (2002-present) Awards and distinctions: He was awarded Silver Medal for securing 1st Position in MS Exam, PGIMER, Chandigarh in Dec 1987. His research on fibrin glue fetched best paper award “Fibrin Glue in Strabismus Surgery”, in SSI Conference 1998. He got the best paper award for research paper on “Dry Eye in JRA”, in National Conference on padiatric deseases, 2000. He was awarded best paper on Chemical Eye Injury by World Health Organization in SAARC Conference, Nepal. He was also awarded a Fellowship Award for Research in Cornea in Seri ARVO meeting on research in Vision and Opthamology Feb 2005 at Singapore. More recently he has received the most prestigious Achievement Award in the Intenational Conference of American Academy of Ophthalmology held at Sanfrancisco in United States of America held in October 2009. He has also received International Ophthalmologista Education Award by American Academy of Ophthalmology Nov 2011.

Research Work

Dr Sharma has a keen interest in Research in Corneal Diseases. He has presented (140) papers including 56 in International and 84 in National Conferences. He has published 144 papers, 66 in prestigious International and 78 in National Journals. He has also authored 14 chapters in various books.

EYE DONATION

He has been instrumental in promoting eye donation in the region. He is the Member of the Executive Committee, Eye Bank Association of India. He was the Founding Hon. Secretary of Eye Bank Society, Chandigarh & gave his expert services for Eye Bank in PGI for nearly 2 decades. Being the Director of Cornea Centre he serves as Medical Director of City Eye Bank since it started in 2004. He regularly organises & participates in various work shops, eye donation awareness program & his efforts have been appreciated nationally & internationally.
